Fat Vampire was on my radar months before it was published and the whole concept just made me giggle. I mean, what would YOU do if you were turned into a vampire at your most awkward, 15-year-old “fat” stage? To make it worse, you’ve been turned not by a hot girl vampire but a dude from your high school. Unfortunately, Doug is no Edward Cullen and finds himself feeding off cows and running from a crazy vampire hunter tv show. Jeez, can it get any worse?
Adam Rex takes the typical teen angst novel and turns it up a notch. Doug and his best friend Jay, are trying to figure out how this vampire business works and could not be more typical in their teenage boyness. The pace is fairly quick and the story laced with humor for the first part of the book. Towards this end it does seem to have an identity crisis of sorts as Doug reaches his angry phase in dealing with his condition. All the coming of age drama is present and the vampire twist is sure to draw in readers. 324 pages, 2010.
