If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where’s My Prince? by Melissa Kantor

02 Oct

A modern day telling of Cinderella-complete with a mom who died too young, father who is away most of the time, an evil stepmother and two evil stepsisters. Lucy thinks life has taken a very sharp turn downward since her dad remarried and relocated them to Long Island. Having spent the last two months eating lunch alone, she is skeptical when the cutest boy in the school starts talking to her and the popular girls want to hang out. Can any of this be real? And what will the evil stepfamily think?

Not as predictable as the reader may think getting into the novel. A quick read with minimal character development-as with a lot of teen reads, you don’t get a chance to really get to know the main character and what has shaped her life. The setting could be anywhere as long as it was a place unfamiliar and new to Lucy. The tone is a mixture of teen angst, anger and eventual self-sufficiency. 2005, 283 pages.
