We Are All Fine Here by Mary Guterson

01 Oct

Julia, close to 40, has reached a point in her life where nothing makes her happy. The spark is gone from her marriage, her husband has a crush on a cute, young co-worker, her teenage son is growing more distant by the minute and she just slept with an ex that she considers to be the love of her life. When she discovers she is pregnant and unsure of who the father is, Julia must come to terms with her life and the cast of characters it inhabits.

This slim novel explores the internal feelings of a middle aged housewife who doesn’t have the energy or desire to make solid changes in her life. Therefore she remains stuck and unhappy-a plight that many women can relate to. Quick paced with sparse language Guterson’s debut novel has moments of humor and discovery but has an overlying theme of desperation. 2005, 184 pages.
