The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler

01 Oct

Five women and one enigmatic man meet on a monthly basis to discuss the novels of Jane Austen, one at a time. As they debate Marianne’s marriage and whether or not Charlotte is gay, they reveal nothing so much as their own “private Austen’s.”

Medium paced novel, the plot is slowly revealed. Multiple plot lines, flashbacks and different points of view permeate this densely written novel. Character development is a key element. All lives are intertwined in hopes that readers will identify with at least one character.

Includes “mock” discussion questions from the characters and a brief synopsis of Austen’s novels. 2004, 250 pages.
