Combining characters from the Civil War and from the present day, McCrumb spins a tale that exemplifies the heartache, despair, and destruction the war brought to the people of North Carolina. Enough so that the people of today learn how easy it is to bring back the past.
Incredible storytelling with a nice ghosty feel. The weaving of each characters stories throughout the novel and bringing them all together in the end is magical. Fact based fiction-you learn a lot of true information about the Civil War in North Carolina and Zabulon Vance. Not a part of the mystery series but brings in beloved characters like Nora Bonestell, Rattler and Spencer Arrowood. 2003, 333 pages.
